The Third Street Compound is a multi-family residential studio development in the town of Marfa, Texas. Marfa has a growing artist community anchored by the work of minimalist artist Donald Judd. The Compound constists of four unit types all utilizing a similar structural frame and material pallete. Baker A+D is collaborating with architects Sharon Odum and JonesBaker of Dallas, Texas.

Self-serve frozen yogurt is all about choice and variety. This design lets the customer know, in no uncertain terms, that they have found the mecca of fun deserts. The "color flow" draws customers into the space and sets up the circulation pattern of this unique restaurant concept: pick a cup, pick a yogurt flavor (or two, or three...), select your toppings, pay and enjoy!

This was the largest design competition in history with over 5200 entries:
A grove of Trees engages a field of stones. At the north wall of the footprint of the North Tower stands The Wall Of Light, an illuminated glass wall inscribed with the names of those who died. From here emerges the grid of trees of the world, at one end dense, private and contemplative, at the other open and engaging.

The stones of the world begin at the waterfall and the footprint of the South Tower, dense enough to pave the ground, they move across the site to engage the trees, rising from the ground and separating. They become both resting places and objects of contemplation.

The stones and trees represent the number of lives lost, 3022, and symbolize our history and our future. When the stones and trees engage each other, representations of life and death are brought into proximity with one another to create a condition that transcends both.

As the two grids open up and dissolve, the trees meet the stones to produce an entirely new condition resulting in a space that is simultaneously open, community-oriented and contemplative. Here, at this confluence of the footprints, a simple meditative space occurs: a stone for sitting beneath the shelter of a tree.

By merging these two systems to create a unique third space, this memorial attempts to overcome the binary oppositions that increasingly color our perceptions of the world. The impact of the park is a result of that relationship.

Renderings of Piñon Village

Design and renderings of the Harry Ives Memorial. This memorial to an important Albuquerque cycling activist was erected on the Bosque Bike Trail along the Rio Grande River.

This new classroom building for the Albuquerque public school system is designed as an exciting and functional facility, which will promote creativity and be conducive to teaching and learning. This project is seeking USGBC LEED For Schools, Gold Certification. Many of the same LEED strategies listed in the Duranes Elementary project have been utilized here, with the addition of natural light monitors, an active recycling room, and enhanced acoustics. The classrooms have been designed to be spacious, quiet and naturally lit.

- Spacious. Each classroom, which will house 4th and 5th grade students, is approximately 980 square feet. Larger classrooms which were requested by the user group allow various furniture layouts, reduce overcrowding and can facilitate project-based learning.

- Acoustics. Ceilings are constructed of Tectum, a unique structural panel which performs approximately 60% better in NRC (noise reduction) than the standard acoustical tiles. HVAC equipment is sound
isolated from the classrooms and specified to have low operational noise.

- Natural light / views. Our site necessitated a north / south orientation, so primary windows are to the east and the west. The sun has been controlled with large overhangs and orientation to limit glare and overheating. Large "light monitors" have been provided in the middle of the rooms to bring the natural light into the back of the room.

Since the Barcelona campus has a very limited area, it is especially important that the building is integrated into the site in a non-intrusive way. The building footprint strengthens the existing circulation artery from the playground to the field through the new breezeway. The design also provides a safe and sheltered waiting area for students at the pick-up/ drop-off area.
